Runway Status Lighting System
The Runway Status Lighting System (RWSL) is an autonomous early warning system designed to prevent runway incursions. The system monitors conflicts involving aircraft and vehicles on the runway in real time. By controlling the Takeoff Holding Lights (THL) embedded on the runway and the Runway Entry Lights (REL) at the entrance, it enhances situational awareness for pilots and vehicle drivers using the runway.
When a runway incursion event is detected, either the takeoff holding light or the runway entry light will automatically turn red, providing a direct and immediate warning to the pilot and vehicle driver. This allows them to take swift action to prevent runway incursion events, thereby improving the safety of airport operations.
